This paper lays out a successful protocol for treating severely malnourished children, tested in a refugee camp environment. The team recommended that treatment include 80 gm dried skimmed milk; 50 gm sugar; 60 gm oil; minerals; and vitamins per liter of food. The protocol specified feeding 100 ml/kg/day of the formula (133 ml with water) during the first few days, increased to 200 ml/kg/day once the children regain their appetite. This protocol was later adopted by the WHO as standard protocol for treatment of severe acute malnutrition.
